The Steam Project

Updated 7/20/2019 –

I know that I’m not alone in having a massive, neglected Steam library. The sales come as often as the seasons and always get me with the bargains. However, after all these years, I’ve now got a massive backlog of Steam games that I’ve never touched.

So in the pursuit of entertainment, I’ve decided to dust them off and give them each a shot. I’ll be spending time with all the games in my Steam library that I’ve not put time into and haven’t played on another console and writing a short review of them. At the end of the review, I’ll list how much time I spent with them and whether I’ll keep playing or uninstall. I’m hoping that through this process, I can find some real gems (and some duds).

Age of Wonders III

A cool turn based strategy game. Plays a bit like a Total War game, but the battles are turn based. An hour in and the story is a little cliche (Elves are the greatest, Humans are ruining the world, blah blah blah.) but I still enjoyed my time with it.

Alan Wakes American Nightmare(2012)

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare

The Twilight Zone meets Max Payne. I played the original Alan Wake years ago, but never got around to trying out this stand alone DLC. I really enjoy the narration utilized here to tell the story and the combat, while repetitive, is still pretty enjoyable. It’s pretty short (3.5 hours according to How Long to Beat) so I almost completed it in one sitting.

Time Spent Playing: 4 hours

Verdict: Keep Playing

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs

A horror game where you have no weapons, only a lantern to light your way. To be honest, I didn’t make it very far into this. Not because I was too scared to go on, but because I wasn’t in the right mood for the slow pace this game has. I actually really love horror games, especially those that are more psychological in nature, but this one just didn’t work for me at this moment. I’m interested to see what’s going on with the story in the game and I’ve only barely started scratching the surface. I may try to revisit this one around Halloween, when the mood is right.

Time Spent Playing: 29 minutes

Verdict: Uninstall

ARMA II

The main reason I purchased this game was for the DayZ Mod, which was really popular back in 2013. After spending a little bit of time with it, I see that the main game really isn’t for me. It’s a military simulator and is therefore pretty complex with its controls and mechanics. Years ago, I probably would’ve been really into this, but these days when time has become an important resource, I just want to get into a game, learn to play it quickly and get going. It seems like a fine game, but just not for me.

Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition

I remember originally buying this game during my Diablo II craze back in the day because it looked similar from the screen shots on the back of the box. I was definitely wrong in its similarity to Diablo and I didn’t give it much of a chance back then. I dove into it this time knowing what to expect but I’m still struggling to stay in it. At this point, the game is fairly dated, so that definitely doesn’t help, but having played more modern games like this, I don’t think I’ll be able to stick with this one.

Time Spent Playing 47 minutes

Verdict: Uninstall

Besiege

I was gifted this game a few years ago. It tasks you with building a machine of death and destroying buildings, villages and armies. This is a game that I would only play in short bursts. It’s a lot of fun to see what you can come up with but it can get old pretty quick. I’ll keep this one around for a bit.

Time Spent Playing: 37 minutes

Verdict: Keep Playing
